Why are so many people against the Catholic Church?

I was brought up a strict Catholic and suffered terribly at the hands of some of those who pretended to have the interests of the Church and even God at heart. I feel I have my own reasons for avoiding the Church but nothing seems to stir up so much feeling and resentment than Catholicism especially among the other Christian faiths?
