66% of adults are overweight?

I find this statistic hard to believe, but I've seen it several times in newspaper articles or on tv. i've even heard claims that 1/3 of the population is obese. Looking at the people around me, most of them seem to be of an average weight or a little heavy. Sure, there are some truly obese people out there, but where are these incredibly high numbers coming from?
