Anybody know how to test cross two unknown genotypes?PLZZ!?

hey can anybody help me on my bio final. i need to do test crossing of an animal such as a red bird for example, and i have to know what its parents genotypes are. i would have to run a test cross in order to find out.. what are the steps??? plzzz help!
