What is political conservatism?

I hear the term all the time, but I have never been certain of what it really means. To me, conserving is to use something sparingly and wisely, to save. But it appears to just mean "right wing" in political discussions, and right wingers don't seem to care about saving anything or using anything carefully with thought to the future.
