Why did an AP newspaper report Obama was Kenyan-born?

When Obama ran for the US Senate the AP press reported him being as Kenyan-born. Not to sure if this was a typo or mistake. Hawaiian official have reported Obama as being a native of the state. But still doubt still lingers. The only other persons who might have a clue as to what platform Obama ran on is his political rival Republican Jack Ryan, who drop out of the race because of a scandal, and Judy Topinka who is chairwoman of the Republican party.
